Where SilverCrest RC Performs
Aluminum roofing rarely rusts through, but it does everything else: panels oxidize and chalk, seam sealants dry out, fasteners loosen as long panel runs expand and contract, and decades of UV leave the surface porous and dull. SilverCrest RC was built for exactly that failure pattern — a fluid-applied membrane that bonds to aged aluminum and moves with it.
Typical projects our applicators coat every week:
- Standing seam aluminum on commercial and institutional buildings, where seam caps and clip fasteners are the first leak points.
- Corrugated and ribbed ag panels on barns, machine sheds and grain buildings.
- Aluminum awnings, carports and patio covers — small-quantity pails ship direct for these jobs.
- Mobile home and park model roofs, where a seamless white or aluminum-gray finish also cuts summer heat gain.
Because the membrane is self-flashing, it climbs and seals every rib, seam and screw head in one continuous film — no mesh, no butter-grade detailing on most roofs.
Surface Prep on Aluminum
Aluminum is one of the friendlier substrates to coat, but the oxide layer decides how well anything sticks. Our applicator spec is short and non-negotiable:
- Wash. Pressure wash at 2,500–3,500 PSI with a degreasing cleaner to remove chalking, mildew and atmospheric grime. Chalk that transfers to a dark rag after washing means wash again.
- Scuff or etch. Bright, mill-finish or previously Kynar-painted aluminum gets a scuff pad or an etching wash to give the membrane a profile to key into.
- Tighten and treat fasteners. Re-drive backed-out screws, replace stripped ones a gauge up, and spot-prime any dissimilar-metal fasteners to stop galvanic staining under the new film.
- Detail the transitions. Open seams wider than a quarter inch and panel end-laps get a brush-grade pass before the full spray coat.
Seasonal Windows
Apply between 50°F and 120°F surface temperature, at least 5°F above dew point. In the upper Midwest and Northeast that means a practical season of late April through October; in the Sun Belt, avoid mid-afternoon summer applications when panel temperatures spike past the window. The fast tack-free time means an unexpected shower an hour after spraying is a non-event, not a redo.
Substrate Notes
Long aluminum panel runs move more than steel — roughly twice the thermal expansion — which is why rigid mastics and asphalt patches on aluminum always split. With 400% elongation, the cured membrane stretches across seam movement daily and returns without fatigue. On roofs with prior aluminized asphalt coatings, do a test patch first; heavily alligatored asphalt layers should be scraped back to sound material.
